EA and DICE have announced that Season 7 will be the last major content update for Battlefield 2042. In this context, it was reported that work will begin on the next game in the beloved action-shooter series.
EA rolls up its sleeves for the next Battlefield game
Byron Beede, a senior executive at EA, spoke about the future of the Battlefield series. Saying that small updates will continue for Battlefield 2042, Beede explained that new maps, weapons and vehicles are no longer being developed.
The last season, dubbed “Turning Point”, was intended to turn the game around after launch in late 2021. However, Beede admitted that the update and ongoing support failed to bring back many players.
“When we looked at what the future of the franchise requires, it became clear that it was time to fully shift our resources and focus to the next step,” the executive said in a statement.
EA remains confident in the long-term future of the Battlefield franchise. Beede said that DICE, Criterion, Ripple Effect and Motive studios will now work on both multiplayer and single-player Battlefield projects.
While EA claims to have assembled the biggest Battlefield teams ever, investment in the series has reportedly been scaled back following the failure of 2042.
This major announcement on the BF series comes after EA laid off around 5 percent of its employees in February. The gaming giant also shut down its Ridgeline studio, which was established to create single-player Battlefield content.
